The Chicago Archives + Artists Project<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Launched in 2017, the Chicago Archives + Artists Project<\/a> pairs artists with archives across Chicago to spark new experiments in creative interpretation and archival practice, to showcase the rich histories and materials held in participating archives, and to advance the preservation and memory work of local artists and their communities. The project explores archives across the city via online features, new artist commissions, and public programs, including three iterations of the Chicago Archives + Artists Festival. A book that reflects on the project and serves as a site for new archive-inspired work was published in 2023. CA+AP is made possible by the Teiger Foundation. Diamond in the Back<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In 2021, Sixty began a two-year partnership with The Blackivists<\/a> on their community archiving initiative Diamond in the Back: Excavating Chicago\u2019s Black Cultural and Material Heritage<\/em><\/a>, a project that seeks to excavate and amplify unknown gems of cultural and material heritage of the Black community. With a non-extractive, post-custodial approach, The Blackivists provided resources to a cohort of local residents and groups that have a demonstrated interest in or are currently archiving, documenting, and preserving aspects of the Black experience in the Chicagoland area. The Blackivists is a collective of trained Black archivists who prioritize Black cultural heritage preservation and memory work. The project is supported by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Get Archived<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Get Archived<\/em> is a series of events inviting artists in Chicago to use their archival materials to start a file in the Chicago Artist Files at Harold Washington Library. The Get Archived <\/em>events were hosted in collaboration with WBEZ in their Neighborhood Bureaus, allowing us to take our archiving efforts with the Chicago Public Library to Englewood, Humboldt Park, as well as other art centers, artist-run spaces, and cultural incubators. Sixty\u2019s relationship with WBEZ began in 2010-2014 when we collaborated with Chicago Public Media and WBEZ\u2018s Off-Air program to take our work off the internet and beyond the walls of the library and into Chicago\u2019s neighborhoods, cultural centers, and art centers. In 2011, we produced What\u2019s Your Art? a festival that invited twelve of the city\u2019s art centers to recreate the energy of their space in the halls of the Chicago Cultural Center.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Loss\/Capture<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Launched in 2020, Loss\/Capture is an editorial project co-led by archivists, librarians, artists, activists, and curators that explores the current state of Black, Indigenous, Latinx, and diasporic collections in and beyond Chicago. The project is designed to speak directly to local and national archiving communities while bringing the archival profession\u2019s evolving practices and most pressing concerns to an audience of cultural workers, artists, writers, curators, grantmakers, street scholars, and community archivists. Guest edited by Steven D. Booth and Stacie Williams, Loss\/Capture\u2019s first volume focuses on the state of Black cultural archives in and beyond Chicago, and aims to celebrate Black cultural heritage and its prospects for liberation. Loss\/Capture\u2019s inaugural guest editors and the Sixty team are continuing to explore how to expand the project, and invite a new round of collaborators to create future volumes, especially ones that dig into the current state of Latinx and Indigenous cultural collections in Chicago and the Midwest.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Sixty Collective<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Built by and for our communities, Sixty Collective<\/em> was created to show love to the people who keep Sixty Inches From Center running, to deepen our advocacy for creative labor, and to facilitate healthy working conditions and opportunities within all aspects of our creative communities. Using a solidarity economy lens, Sixty Collective<\/em> is how we create models for what is possible when artists work together to address the chronic issues that keep us from pursuing our creative careers in healthier, fuller, and more expansive ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Midwest Satellites<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Midwest Satellites<\/em> is a multi-year relationship-building initiative and series of collaborations between Sixty and several regional cities. Over the next two years, Sixty will work with partners in up to four cities to co-create projects that echo and find inspiration in Sixty\u2019s existing editorial and archiving programs but are customized for the needs and circumstances of each city\u2019s cultural ecosystem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Find & Seek<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Launched in 2025, Find & Seek is a way for Sixty\u2019s community of artists, cultural workers, and culture lovers to build new connections and spark new relationships throughout the Midwest. Find & Seek takes inspiration from \u201cmissed connection\u201d webpages and newspaper classifieds by inviting you to use Sixty\u2019s platforms to find<\/strong> (re)connections or seek<\/strong> new artful connections somewhat anonymously. You can post encounters where you thought you were vibing with someone at an event but were thwarted by shyness and circumstances, or you can post invitations to meet new people and plan a new art date. With Find & Seek<\/strong> we at Sixty hope to bring an added layer of joy, curiosity, bravery, and possibility to the process.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Midwest Arts Writers Convening<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

On April 27-29, 2025 Sixty hosted our inaugural Midwest Arts Writers Convening at Haymarket House in Chicago. We brought together over 40 writers, editors, and representatives from Chicago-based and regional publications in order to discuss and determine what our region needs and to collectively define and embrace a Midwest approach to arts writing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sixty Regional<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In 2016, Sixty initiated new relationships and tapped into existing connections we had in Bloomington-Normal, Peoria, Springfield, Rockford, and Urbana-Champaign, and published a series of articles by local artists and writers within each location. The following year, and thanks to the support from Illinois Humanities, we expanded these partnerships to include collaborative residencies, cross-state discussions, a symposium, a new artist-run online publication, writer exchanges, and mini-grants to our partners. As a result of these efforts, Sixty officially incorporated our Midwest scope into our mission in 2018 and today we have contributors, editors, and collaborators from wider reaches of the Midwest, including Indiana, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio, and Wisconsin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CANJE<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In 2022, Sixty launched <\/strong>CANJE: an exploration in cultural criticism engaging five artists in the Chicago community. As part of this summer-long program, five folks from Sixty came together and formed a cohort to collaboratively establish best practices in cultural criticism while creating a supportive critique environment that puts the artist first so that the experience is mutually beneficial. The second iteration of CANJE was reimagined by the Peoria Guild of Black Artists and took the shape of an exhibition and two days of artist presentations, exhibitions, an open mic night, and a series of new commissioned work by PGOBA artists.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Crowdsourcing the Canon<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

As a part of a new collaboration with Black Lunch Table, Sixty launched an open call for writers to pitch critical essays, journalistic takes, exhibition reviews, and\/or deep dives into the lives and practices of Black artists based in the Midwest, especially those whose Wikipedia pages lack sufficient citations, for the new editorial series: Crowdsourcing the Canon<\/em>. The underrepresentation of Black artists on Wikipedia mirrors the imbalance in coverage of Black artists in general publishing and critical art writing. Through this initiative, we aim to increase the quantity and quality of citations possible for articles about contemporary Black artists on Wikipedia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NPN Visiting Critic Program<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In partnership with the National Performance Network (NPN), Sixty launched the NPN Visiting Critic Program, which offered an opportunity for a Chicago-based critic to attend a three-day conference hosted in Chicago\u2014which brought together NPN\u2019s 57 performing arts partner organizations\u2014and participate in discussions about the current state of the performing arts field with Chicago artists, arts leaders, and national presenting arts orgs. The critic then shared their reflections on this experience in an essay published on Sixty. NPN is a national network of artists and organizations committed to advancing racial and cultural justice through the arts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Art Design Chicago<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

An initiative of the Terra Foundation for American Art, Art Design Chicago (ADC) is a special series of events and exhibitions that highlight the voices and stories that are part of Chicago’s unique artistic heritage and creative communities. The foundation partners with local artists and arts organizations across the city to expand narratives of American art with an emphasis on Chicago\u2019s diverse and vibrant creative cultures and the stories they tell. Since 2018, Sixty has partnered with the Terra Foundation to produce new essays, interviews, photography, videos, a podcast series, and illustrated stories that offer a distinct lens through which to experience the stories within and at the edges of ADC\u2019s roster of programs and projects. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Chicago Arts Census<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Collaboratively launched in 2020 by ACRE<\/a> and Annas<\/a>, the Chicago Arts Census is an artist-run initiative that collects, maps, and visualizes data that illuminates the lived experiences and working conditions of art workers in Chicago. The collected data will be translated into a series of maps, a website, a publication, and public programs that demonstrate the interwoven and dependent relationships that make up Chicago\u2019s art ecosystem. Sixty partnered with the organizers of the Chicago Arts Census to help promote participation and commission writings from artists, writers, organizers, and arts workers that more deeply explore some of the critical issues driving the creation of this project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Midwest Arts Writers Fellowship<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In 2024 Sixty launched our inaugural Midwest Arts Writers Fellowship, a 6-month program for Midwest arts writers to develop, refine, and publish writings that reflect on the complexities of Midwest life and the artists who help define and articulate its culture. Each writer will publish long-form articles that offer a deeper understanding of the cultural ecosystems of the Midwest and explore how their topic\/s intersect politically, culturally, and regionally. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Anchor Editorial Series<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Sixty and Anchor Curatorial Residency is partnering to publish a series of articles that explore, challenge, and document the curatorial process and experiences within the Residency. The writings will range from conversations with fellow curators, artists, and collaborators to experimental essays delving into the topics that impact the curatorial practices of the resident curators. Anchor Curatorial Residency<\/a> is an 18-month project hosted by the Chicago Parks District that culminates in a collaborative exhibition on park district land. The editorial series will be launched in Summer 2024.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

UnderMain Magazine<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Over the course of 2022, five of Sixty\u2019s writers participated in a new program with the Kentucky-based arts publication, UnderMain<\/em>. With the goal of creating conversations about arts and culture in the Midwest and the near South, UnderMain\u2019s program On the Road<\/em> brought five of Sixty\u2019s writers into various areas of Kentucky to explore the visual arts and produce new writings in response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bemis Critic-in-Residence Program<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Beginning in 2022, Sixty partnered with Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts to create a critic-in-residence program that brings a Chicago-based arts writer to Omaha, Nebraska to write a reflection on one of their exhibitions on view. The program provides an opportunity for a writer to engage with Bemis Center\u2019s artists-in-residence, sparking new dialogue and regional exchange while offering space for critics to expand their practice.

Mu\u00f1a<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

During the Summer of 2022, Chuquimarca hosted Mu\u00f1a, a 3-month art writing program providing a cohort of six writers the opportunity to critically and creatively engage with art writing strategies, readings, exercises, and conversations. The program is structured for writers to develop and refine their practices through guided workshops and peer-review feedback. Its task is to stir, incubate, and pollinate shared consciousness on holistic, equitable, and attentive art writing and language practices. In partnership with Mu\u00f1a, Sixty worked with the cohort to support and publish their writing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Something To Look Forward To<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

TRACE<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In <\/strong>2020, <\/strong>Sixty partnered with <\/strong>TRACE (Teens Re-Imagining Art, Community & Environment)<\/a>, a program of the Chicago Parks District  that creates opportunities for Chicago artists and teens to use art to engage, inspire, and persist for positive change. Over the course of the summer, Sixty worked with TRACE\u2019s Senior Program Specialist Marcus E. Davis to publish photos made by the students of lead teaching artists and co-founders of alt_Chicago<\/a> Jordan Campbell and Jon Veal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perto de L\u00e1 < > Close to There<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Close to There <> Perto de L\u00e1 is an artist exchange program between Salvador, Brazi, and Chicago organized by Comfort Station (Chicago), Projeto Ativa (Salvador) and Harmonipan (Mexico City) between 2019 and 2020. In partnership with this program, Sixty published a series of conversations between the participating artists, pairing makers from Brazil and makers from Chicago for a conversational exchange, allowing them to connect about their practices prior to meeting one another for the first time. Each exchange was edited by Marina Santos Resende and translated into Portuguese.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Transition to Power<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In 2017 On The Real Film<\/a> presented Transition To Power<\/em>, a documentary web series created as a response to the 2016 United States Presidential Election. Created in collaboration with Sixty, Transition To Power<\/em> dives into the aftermath of the election through the eyes of artists and creatives. In each episode, artists discuss their thoughts on how to move forward in this explosive and fragile political climate.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Envisioning Justice<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

As part of Illinois Humanities\u2019 Envisioning Justice initiative, in 2018 Sixty created a 9-month residency for writers, photographers, activists, artists, and organizers to publish writings and photo documentation of the work happening at the cross-section of art and the criminal justice system. Envisioning Justice is a series of projects, events, programs, and collaborations that look into how Chicagoans and Chicago artists respond to the impact of incarceration in local communities and how the arts and humanities are used to devise strategies for lessening this impact.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

We Series<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Presented by Elastic Arts in collaboration with Sixty Inches From Center, the We Series<\/em> presented live art that blurs the line between performance and reality, with a soft spot for the participatory, ceremonial, ritualistic, immersive, and tutorial. The performances in this series debuted every Tuesday evening in January 2021. In tandem, Sixty published written companion pieces on the same day, authored by poets, playwrights, designers, musicians, bakers, and more. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
